Forget "flushed from a jog." This week's alt beauty obsession is bruised blush, the moodier, more romantic cousin of your standard peachy flush. Instead of a healthy glow, you're building soft plum, wine and mauve tones across the cheeks that look like they've been kissed (or bitten 🦇) rather than sunburnt. It's morbid, it's a little bit vampiric, and it is exactly the kind of gorgeous ambiguity we love here at Jolie Beauty.
What is the bruised blush trend?
Where classic blush placement chases "your cheeks but better," bruised blush leans into contrast and shadow. Colour is placed slightly lower and further back toward the hairline, then diffused hard until the edges disappear, the same way a healing bruise fades from deep violet into soft yellow green at the edges. On skin it reads as sculptural, a little unwell in the most beautiful way, and endlessly flattering under candlelight or a phone flash. It pairs beautifully with soft smoky eyes, stained lips, or on its own for a quieter, undone kind of glamour.
Step 1: Start with a soft, dewy base
This look lives and dies on blendability, so keep your base slightly damp looking rather than fully matte. A cream or skin tint base gives the blush something to melt into. Don't set your whole face with powder yet, you'll want bare skin around the cheekbones for the next steps.
Step 2: Build the cream in two tones
Dot Velvet Cream Blush in Lust, our deepest berry toned shade, onto the highest point of the cheek and just under the outer corner of the eye. Then take Velvet Cream Blush in Bliss and warm a lighter, more diffuse layer just below it, blending the two into each other with clean fingertips or a damp sponge. You're not aiming for a single flat colour, you want the deeper wine tone to sit like the centre of the "bruise" with the softer shade fading it outward.
Blend until you genuinely can't find the line where one shade stops and the other begins. That soft gradient is the entire trick.
Step 3: Set and deepen with powder
Once the cream has melted in, press Second Skin Powder Blush in Dusty Rose lightly over the top with a fluffy brush from our Ethereal PRO Face Makeup Brush Set. This locks the cream in place, adds a bit of dimension, and stops the look sliding by golden hour. Use a light hand, you're softening the shape, not adding a whole new layer of colour.
Step 4: Fake the fade
The detail that sells this whole trend is the ombre edge. Using a clean brush with almost no product left on it, buff outward from the deepest point of colour toward your hairline and jaw so it genuinely looks like it's dissolving into your skin, rather than stopping in a hard circle. Go slowly here. It's much easier to add colour back than to take it away.
Step 5: Pair it with the rest of your face
Bruised blush wants a slightly smudged, unfinished energy everywhere else too. A wash of the darkest shade from our Spellbound Palette smudged along the lash line ties the whole face together without competing with the cheeks.
For lips, skip a full lipstick. Instead, pat Eternal Lip Liner in Nocturnal directly onto the centre of the lips with a fingertip and blend the edges out, echoing the same "bitten, not painted" fade you built on the cheeks.
Step 6: Lock it in
